My order from Flagstone Wines arrived just in time for me to open a bottle when I got back from Jo’burg. The Dragon Tree Cape Blend 2019 won Wine of the Year in the 2022 National Wine Challenge, so you’ll see even more stickers on the bottle than the one I have in the pic.
The tasting notes on the bottle describe it as “a mixture of dark berries, cigar box and minty aromas” on the nose, and “an explosion of fruit and a lingering aftertaste” on the palette. Pretty much sure it up.
It’s definitely a remarkable wine, but I wouldn’t have it on my shortlist for wine of the year. It gets a Platters 4 star, and it won a Michelangelo gold. Those ratings I agree with more than the top accolade in this year’s NWC. At R145 a bottle it’s a great value wine, and you really can’t go wrong with this one.
