Middelvlei Wine Estate Free Run Pinotage 2020 – I can’t rave about this wine or the estate enough. I discovered Middelvlei wines at a very entertaining wine tasting evening hosted by Ben Momberg, the estate’s marketing manager. I bought some of the wines after the event and Ben added extra bottles to my case just for fun.
I think this is one of the most underrated Pinotage’s I’ve tasted. A lot of the Pinotages I’ve tasted are a little tart. Middelvlei’s wine maker took on a “back to basics” approach, keeping everything natural and avoiding anything artificial in the process and the Free Run Pinotage is very easy on the palette, definitely not tart at all.
The Free Run Pinotage is one of the best Pinotage’s I’ve tasted. It hits the nose with a full ripened plum aroma and the wine itself is beautifully textured, full of berry and plum notes, and is smooth and well balanced. Platters only gives this wine 3.5 stars / 86 points. At R145/bottle I think it’s excellent value.
It changes flavour if you have it with a sweet cheese (tried that tonight- not a good idea). I had this one last night with some savoury snacks and some chicken curry, but it would go better with a decent fillet.
